Any pilot knows that they need a lot of gear to get the job done. It takes a lot of stuff to keep that plane in the air. You need to know where you are and you need to have perfect lines of communication open at all times. Thankfully, there have been a number of advances on both fronts.
Airplane GPS is incredibly advanced at this point. Garmin even offers incredibly detailed portable models. You can take it right out of the cockpit and switch it over to a driving model. That’s pretty cool. Even these little models have full airport directories and an ability to monitor your flight path for heavy traffic or obstacles.
Communication is just as important as navigation though. You need a good Telex headset, or at least one of comparable quality. Telex is a good brand to look at because they have been making these models for nearly 50 years. They are also usually quite helpful for beginners who are figuring out what they need. The Lightspeed Zulu options are quite good too though. They offer a really high quality headset that works to dampen noise and amplify incoming reports while also feeling really comfortable. You’d be making a good choice from either brand.
